North Richmond
Major Projects
Truck Route Study
Over the past decade, big-rig truck traffic in the
North Richmond area has increased dramatically. This traffic poses great
safety concerns and has adversely impacted the surrounding residential
community in many ways, including lowered air quality, increased asthma
rates, and reduced pedestrian safety.
Purpose
The County, in coordination with the community of North Richmond, recently
completed a year long study to:
- Identify an alternative route for trucks to travel
that minimizes the use of
neighborhood streets and is supported by the community, local businesses
and local jurisdictions
- Structure the project to maximize future funding opportunities
to implement and construct the alternate truck route
Work Element and Schedule
The truck route study consisted of the following working
sessions with community based organizations:
- Community Meeting I - August 2006: Presented
the project to the public
- Data collection and analysis including auto, truck, pedestrian
and bicycle counts; truck travel patterns; air quality emissions and asthma-related
data; railroad frequency; other related information
- Development of two to four alternative truck routes
- Community Meeting II - November 2006:
Presented draft alternatives and received public input
- Identification of a preferred alternative truck route
- Community Meeting III - January 22, 2007: Presented
preferred alternative and received public input on the final written plan.
Key Project Issues
- Identify efficient truck access that minimizes use of streets
in the neighborhood and near Verde Elementary
- Reduce negative health effects on sensitive populations
while promoting economic development
- Actively engage residential, school
and industrial communities
