Regional Transportation

Bay Point is located at the edge of a world-class transportation center-the San Francisco Bay Area. The community is located just 7 miles from I-680, along State Highway 4, the major east-west artery in Northern Contra Costa County, providing access to San Francisco, the Silicon Valley, Stockton, and Sacramento. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), the light rail service covering most of the Bay Area, has a station conveniently located in Bay Point. A number of Park-and-Ride locations take commuters to and from the BART station. Tri-Delta Transit provides bus service to the East County. Three hub airports are located less than 60 miles away (Oakland, San Francisco, and Sacramento), and Buchanan Field, a general aviation airport, is located just 6 miles away in Concord. Burlington Northern Santa Fe offers rail service west to Richmond and east to San Joaquin County. Seven ports are located nearby. The largest of these, Oakland, accounts for nearly 5 percent of U.S. exports.

Recreation and Culture

Locally, water lovers will find plenty to explore on the 1,000-plus miles of California's San Joaquin Delta. Boating and fishing is a popular pastime, as evidenced by the close proximity of two harbors in the Bay Point marina area. Ambrose Park with its Olympic-sized swimming pool and Ambrose Community Center provide year-round youth and senior activities. San Francisco, with its endless cultural opportunities, is just across the bay. Theatres, restaurants, art galleries, museums, symphonies, and concerts are just the tip of the iceberg for your discovery. To the north there is wine tasting in the world-famous Napa Valley region. Hikers, bikers and nature lovers enjoy an abundance of parks in central and eastern Contra Costa County, including Mount Diablo State Park, Black Diamond Mines, Big Break Wetlands Area, Contra Loma Regional Parks, the DeAnza Recreational Trail System, and the proposed Bay Point Regional Shoreline Park, to name a few.

K-12 Education

Bay Point is part of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. With an enrollment of over 34,000 students, the district is one of the largest in the state, serving Concord, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, portions of Walnut Creek and Martinez, as well as Bay Point. Local students attend Rio Vista, Shore Acres or Bel Air elementary schools and Riverview Middle School in Bay Point.

Higher Education Institutions

The huge Bay Area population supports a diverse selection of public and private colleges. There are seven four-year schools and six two-year colleges located near Bay Point. Los Medanos College, in neighboring Pittsburg, is part of the California Community College system and offers lower division transfer courses and vocational training for a minimal cost. Evening, weekend, and short-term courses are some of the options available to busy students. California State University, EastBay, offers upper division and graduate courses for working adults at its Contra Costa Campus in Concord, just 6 miles from Bay Point. Business, education, and computers are three areas of study offered there. UC Berkeley, just 20 miles away, is a world-renowned institution offering undergraduate and graduate studies up to the doctoral level.

Vocational Schools & Training Programs

Over 25 vocational schools provide specialized education in Contra Costa County. Training is available in computers and technology, truck driving, radiology, aviation, and broadcasting. There are also five public programs oriented to adult education, ranging from basic skills to occupational skills. Bay Point Works offers career training and hiring services to Bay Point residents and businesses through the Ambrose Community Center.
